Courses With a Scenic Backdrop
When you’re ready to head out on the green in Asheville, there are plenty of wonderful courses from which to choose. For example, you might visit the Asheville Municipal Golf Course. This 18- hole course is actually one of the oldest in North Carolina, as well as being registered on the National Register of Historic Places! Opened in 1927, the course covers 129 acres and offers chipping and putting areas to improve your game. Staff are available for private lessons.
You can also visit the beautiful and historic course at the Grove Park Inn – a historic resort and AAA Four-Diamond hotel in Asheville. You’ll enjoy gorgeous views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and lush fairways surrounded by picturesque trees. Designed in 1926 and overhauled in 2001, the historic location has done much to keep the course’s original spirit. 10 United States presidents have visited the historic inn, which boasts its 18-hole, 6,400 yard championship course. Golfing at Grove Park Inn might just make you feel like a celebrity! The course has been visited by notable figures like PGA stars Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan and Jack Nicklaus, as well as President Obama. Grove Park is open year-round and offers golf instruction, vacation packages, and memberships.
Donald Ross Played a Part
Donald Ross was a famous golf course designer known for creating both of the aforementioned golf courses – right here in Asheville! His courses are notable for working with and taking best advantage of the available land. His career involved the designing or revision of over 400 courses before his death in 1948.
Born in the Scottish coastal town of Dornoch in 1872, Ross grew up playing the game at Royal Dornoch Golf Club, apprenticing at St. Andrews. Ross learned the game from the ground up, by maintaining the grounds as well as playing. In 1899, he came to the United States, where he worked at the Oakley Golf Club in the Boston area. Eventually, he became known not for maintaining courses, but for designing them. He would work from topographical maps and was a master at integrating land features into his designs. Today’s Asheville golfers owe a debt to Donald Ross for his incredible courses.

Nothing beats autumn in the Blue Ridge mountains. Even if you aren’t a golfing fan, the foliage will be a beautiful backdrop for hiking the trails, driving the winding highways, or visiting local tourist attractions like the Biltmore Estate.
Fall temperatures in Asheville are moderate, with October and November highs still in the 60 degree range, and evenings providing time to relax in front of a fireplace, dipping into the 40s. Late September to early November are reported as peak leaf color, but different elevations add variety to their splendor.
