We’re lucky enough to live in a place that sees all of the seasons, and one of the most exciting transitions of all is from summer to fall… and not just because of the pumpkin spice! Here are some tips for changing up your wardrobe this Fall and making the best of what’s already in your closet.
Year-Round Staples Made Warm
The first thing you should do when thinking about fall-ifying your wardrobe is to make good with what you already have! Your summer dresses and skirts can be easily paired with those tights (especially cable-knit!) and leggings that have been sitting in the back of your closet to make a fashionable fall statement, and work perfectly with flats or boots. Leggings and tights can also make these kinds of outfits business causal-friendly when they may have not been before.
Vests are another great upgrade that can be easily put over shirts, long-sleeve or not. This could be anything from your casual cotton sweater vest to a warm, stylish faux-fur dress. You can do up pretty much any standard top with a vest!
Layering is another great tactic to beat the brisk breeze. You can enjoy your tank tops and thin clothes by layering long over lean; think a large cardigan over a bodycon summer dress, or a tank-top with skinny jeans. When layering, following the “long over lean” rule is important to avoid bulkiness; a smooth layering look will always look better.
Maxi dresses are another clothing item you can enjoy year-round. Throw on a cardigan for a sleek work look, or a leather jacket and heeled boots for a night out.
Hue Changes
With a new season comes new hues to diversify your wardrobe color palette! Deeper colors go hand-in-hand with the changing colors. Swap out your pastels, yellows, pinks, and otherwise brights with more neutral, warm colors. Think earthy (darker green, beige, darker brown) royal purple, navy blue, grays, darker reds, and oranges.
A new season should also be an excuse for new hair, right? Try going an auburn brown instead of the sun-reminiscent blonde, or a deep brunette instead of the pink balayage or ombré. There’s nothing quite as liberating as a fresh cut and style. Your nails will need attention, too! Think of something that will match well with your fall outfits, or even just make them a bit warmer, like a deep garnet or metallic gold.
Jean Jackets, Cardigans, and Blazers (oh my!)
Having a wide array of jackets and cardigans will make all the difference when spicing up your fall. Cardigans work well alone to beat those light chills, and can easily be layered under heavier jackets for those colder days. Plus, you can wear a tan cardigan – the ultimate fall staple – with virtually anything!
A good, reliable leather blazer or denim jacket will also be all you need to look good and feel warm. Treat yourself to one – they can easily be used any season during Asheville’s evenings. If you’re feeling extra bold, invest in a faux fur jacker or vest. You’ll never go unnoticed!
Boots, Boots, Boots
Arguably the most fun part of the season’s fashion, Autumn might as well be the universal trigger for boots time. There are many kinds of boots to choose from; knee-high, ankle-high, combat, flat, booties, and many of these with heel options if you’re so inclined. Get the best wear out of them while you can, as they’re usually too hot for summer!
Accessories
Almost as fun as bringing the boots out, scarves can put together just about any outfit. While infinity scarves are versatile and simple, blanket scarves give a modern pop to the poncho look, and provide lots of warmth. For your traditional 2-ended scarf, you can create tons of fun combinations of looks with this tie guide.
Your handbag will often be the first thing someone sees when they look at you, so make a fabulous fall impression! Bring out the orange handbags, or even find quirky Halloween and Thanksgiving-themed bags. Many of these patterns can be worn for months and will certainly turn eyes.
Rules aren’t always meant to be followed
In the end, you are the master of your own wardrobe, and you will flawlessly execute anything you wear! Don’t be afraid to be bold or break these suggested fashion trends; rock whatever makes you most comfortable and happy. Wear tights with open-toed shoes, enjoy the bright pinks, and have as much fun as you want!
